Introduction to Universities of New York City

Universities of New York

This article will attempt to demonstrate the different types of schools to which one can apply in the New York City metropolitan area.  In order to indicate which schools are available, it is necessary to break them up into categories: National Universities, National Liberal Arts Colleges, Regional Universities and Art Schools. First of all, here is a list of the schools in the Tri-State area, which may be considered by Australian students (in order of their U.S. News Ranking) National Universities in New York City: #4: Columbia University #32: New York University #48: Yeshiva University #58: Fordham University #135: New School #145: St. Johns University #173: Pace University National Liberal Arts Colleges in New York City: #32: Barnard College #58: Sarah Lawrence College #171: Purchase College – SUNY Regional Universities and Art Schools in New York City: #18: Manhattan College #19: Pratt Institute (Also considered an Art School) #25: CUNY – Baruch #50: CUNY – Hunter College #65: CUNY – City College #70: St. Josephs College New York #83: Manhattanville College No Ranking: Fashion Institute of Technology No Ranking: School of Visual Arts   National Universities are often the most well known and highly regarded. Most students who wish to study abroad will have heard of these schools first, and will have one of them as their ‘dream school’.  They focus on a breadth of subject areas and comprise of the largest and wealthiest schools in the country. Liberal arts colleges are also very sought after, but not for math and sciences.  These schools are mostly known for their approach to the arts, humanities and social sciences. They are elite and private institutions. Regional universities can also be academically competitive, but often have less funding than National Universities, and are less well known.  A byproduct of this, however, is that acceptance is less competitive. Therefore, if location is what you’re after, but your grades aren’t quite up to par with the more competitive National Universities, these may be the best option for you.
