在2016年初引进的 新SAT 考试第一大变化就是在词汇方面，下面是College Board网站的原文和翻译如下:
“Relevant Words in Context
The redesigned SAT will focus on relevant words, the meanings of which depend on how they’re used. Students will be asked to interpret the meaning of words based on the context of the passage in which they appear. This is demanding but rewarding work. These are words that students will use throughout their lives — in high school, college, and beyond.
Requiring students to master relevant vocabulary will change the way they prepare for the exam. No longer will students use flashcards to memorize obscure words, only to forget them the minute they put their test pencils down. The redesigned SAT will engage students in close reading and honor the best work of the classroom.
上下文相关词汇考察
重新设计的SAT考试会着重考查相关词汇，也就是词汇在具体用法下的意思。问题会是根据上下文来解释词汇的一次。这是一个要求很高但是很有价值的工作。这些词汇也将都会是学生在未来的工作生活中用到的。
要求同学掌握相关单词会改变同学备考的方式 – 使用单词卡来记忆那些隐晦的单词，然后考完试就忘得一干二净这样的现象不会再发生了。新设计的SAT考试会让学生更好的投入到阅读当中，然后重视课堂上的认真学习。”
这样调整的目的很明显是应对很多人对现有SAT考试需要同学大量记忆生僻单词的批评。但是这样是否意味着学生可以告别单词背诵了呢? 实际上并不是这样，原因有两个：
1. 每个人心中“生僻单词”概念不同。比如College Board总裁David Coleman介绍新SAT时举得例子：synthesis和empirical这两个单词。Coleman认为它们是学生未来会经常用到的单词，因此不算“生僻”单词，但是有多少高中生能够很清楚的明白这两个单词的意思呢？因为考试的时候同学不可能argue说：“这个单词是“生僻单词”所以我不会你也要给我分数”，所以单词是肯定需要背的，只是范围需要一些改变。
2. 单词对阅读的帮助依然重大。如果词汇量不够，阅读会有障碍。当然，通过上下文和理解我们可以猜测一些单词的意思，但是没遇到单词就要进行这样的工作是非常浪费时间的，所以单词不可能不背诵。 新SAT 提到了美国建国文献和其他有学习价值的历史材料会被选为阅读内容，那么在类似这样的文章中会出现哪些“生僻单词”呢？
用马丁路德金的Letter from Birmingham Jail为例，这封信中出现了下列单词:
cognizant, superficial, moratorium, unfettered, ominous, ordinance, paternalistically, incorrigible, zeitgeist, sanctimonious, nullification, gladiatorial, scintillating and existential.
